GEORGE NEWS - The application by Cape Estates to develop a private hospital at Kraaibosch Ridge has been withdrawn.
According to one of the developers, Arno de Vos, they withdrew after receiving negative comment from the Department of Environmental Affairs and Development Planning (DEA&DP). In the meantime, a legal process has been running its course to review the George Municipality's rejection of the initial hospital application by the same developers. They applied in 2015 to develop a hospital for Mediclinic on the sawmill site at Kraaibosch. Their application was dismissed in 2017.
"The municipality postponed the review date twice and we have had to wait for months to be heard. We are hoping to have an answer before the end of May," said De Vos.
Mediclinic, the municipality, and Rainbow Properties also submitted opinions during the review hearing.
Senior spatial planner Delia Power said the decision of the appeal authority is now being awaited.
The municipality is in the process of rezoning a section of one of its own properties for the purposes of a hospital development.
This property, in Knysna Road, is currently being rented by the Glenwood mashie golf course and George Riding Club. Mediclinic George is facing critical space constraints in its current building. The company had hoped that construction on their new hospital would start in 2018.
