GEORGE NEWS - They say leap year babies are special. Take the Georgian Ray Upson. Born in the UK on 29 February 1940, no one is sure whether he just celebrated his 80th birthday or his 20th!
Alison, his wife, says his life has been lived in leaps and bounds. "He was a survivor from day one. He was born weighing less than a kilogram."
Surrounded by his children and their partners from Australia and the UK, as well as other family members this past weekend, Ray's life was relived through their memories. Each has left a special message for him:
"Thank you for all the wonderful memories we've made together, both in Australia and South Africa – Michelle;
Your gentle nature and your kindness are the things I love most about you - Hayley;
One of my fondest memories of Dad is travelling around Cornwall with him, getting to see where he grew up and meeting my Cornish family for the first time – Paul;
Dad, thank you for always being supportive, loving and kind, and helping us to realise our dreams. Happy 80th. Love you Dad. – James;
Thanks for being an incredible role model and inspiration. You've always been there for us and I couldn't have asked for a better dad – David."
Ray Upson's children came from Australia and the UK for Ray's 80th birthday celebration. At the back are Alison and Ray Upson. Middle, from left: Jane Upson, David Upson, James Upson, Paul Upson, Hayley Sherman and Michelle Sullivan. Front: grandsons Robbie Sherman (left) and Benji Sherman.
In the 60s, he set off to travel the world and finally settled in South Africa. Contrary to what one may expect from someone with a black belt in karate, says Allison, Ray is really good at public relations.
"In 1984 the family moved from Cape Town to George. The following year, his hobby became his business and he established an international philatelic auction business." This has brought many interesting people across his path and he never tires of sharing his knowledge of stamps with people of all ages.
He has a vision to continue the business for at least another five years. The couple boast six grandsons and are very excited about the upcoming birth of their first granddaughter.
As to the future, says Alison, Ray is now looking forward to celebrating his 21st birthday in four years' time.
