LIFESTYLE NEWS - Get the lowdown on WhatsApp Dark Mode, Twitter’s recent apology and the latest developments on Instagram.
WhatsApp will allow users to “theme” dark mode
WABetaInfo reported new information on WhatsApp’s long-awaited dark mode for Android.
The publication found new updates to dark mode on WhatsApp’s latest Android version 2.19.282 beta. WhatsApp’s dark mode will feature a “Themes” menu in the settings, where users can set their mode preferences.
With dark mode active, users can change their WhatsApp from white to green or hues of dark blue.
They can also set the “system default” option to have the app automatically follow the theme of their device’s settings too. This feature has not been released yet as WhatsApp is still developing dark mode.
Twitter apologised for sharing user information
Twitter is the latest social media site to share user data with advertisers and third parties. The micro-blogging site admitted to and apologised for sharing data without people’s permission including country code, details of users’ engagement with the ad and information about the ad.
Twitter posted a statement that read: “At Twitter, we want to give you control over your data, including when we share that data. Of course, those options are only good if we follow the choices you make, and we recently found issues where your settings choices may not have worked as intended. This may have resulted in two things:”
If you clicked or viewed an advertisement for a mobile application and subsequently interacted with the mobile application since May 2018, Twitter may have shared certain data (e.g., country code, if you engaged with the ad and when, information about the ad, etc) with trusted measurement and advertising partners, even if you didn’t give them permission to do so.
“As part of a process we use to try and serve more relevant advertising on Twitter and other services since September 2018, we may have shown you ads based on inferences we made about the devices you use, even if you did not give us permission to do so. The data involved stayed within Twitter and did not contain things like passwords, email accounts, etc.”
Twitter said that they fixed these issues on 5 August 2019. “We know you will want to know if you were personally affected, and how many people in total were involved. We are still conducting our investigation to determine who may have been impacted and if we discover more information that is useful we will share it.”
Instagram has a new “create” camera tool for gifs
Instagram has revealed a redesigned version of its in-app camera, which includes the platform’s new create tool for Instagram Stories. They made the announcement on Twitter revealing that the new update will be packed with fun new tools including a GIFs format. With this update, the camera still allows the user to shoot directly or choose images from their camera roll with all the texts, filters and features on the top right of the screen.
