GEORGE NEWS - Excellent performances were given during the Young Musicians Competition Gala concert 2018 on Friday night 1 June which took place at the Oakhurst Insurance George Arts Theatre.
The judges had a difficult task deciding who should get the winning trophies and it was felt that more trophies should be awarded next year.
The best classical vocal trophy went to Jodi-Ann Michael.
Almost seventy music learners, their teachers, parents and friends braced icy cold weather to take part in this music highlight organized every year by the George Music Society. The aim of this event is to create an opportunity, to encourage, support and show appreciation to the music learners of George and surrounds. It is also an opportunity for the hardworking and supportive teachers to present to the community the importance of music in schools and that music forms an integral part of a child’s growth, building confidence and self-esteem.
The adjudicators Sue Rijsdijk and Marie Skeen, as well as the audience, were highly impressed by the high standard of the musicians considering the fact that it is exam time and also quite early in the year.
This competition used to take place in September. The adjudicators suggested that more trophies should be donated to make sure that all genres have an appropriate award.
Holy Cross Primary Instrumental Ensemble received the Anna du Toit Trophy for best Junior ensemble. The school's Vocal ensemble received the Music Society award for best Vocal Ensemble.
Senior Trophy
In the end, the difficult decisions had to be made and Kerwin Albertus, talented saxophonist received the First Senior trophy and prize money. He also received the trophy for best saxophonist Ludolph Pedro received the Second Senior award and prize money and shared the best pianist trophy with Nicole Moss. The First Junior award and prize money was awarded to pianist Steven Kapp. Livvi van Jaarsveld, vocalist, received the Second Junior award.
The local twins - Chloe and Asha Tait, vocal duet, received the trophy for best duo.
Music Excellence trophy
Elizma Beylevelt, pianist and vocalist received the Anna du Toit Bravura trophy and prize money for most versatile musician. Marianne Holm, clarinet player, received the Martha Avierinos Trophy for Music Excellence.
Outeniqua High received the trophy for best Senior Ensemble and Holy Cross Primary Instrumental Ensemble received the Anna du Toit Trophy for best Junior ensemble. Holy Cross Primary Vocal ensemble received the Music Society award for best Vocal Ensemble.
At the Young Musicians Competition's Gala evening - Marize Gouws was awarded the 'senior flautist trophy'; Kerwin Albertus received dthe 'best saxophonist' and 'First Senior trophy'; Pianist and vocalist - Elizma Beylevelt - won the Bravura tophy for the 'Most' versatile musician.
Chloe and Asha Tait, vocal duet, received the trophy for best duo or trio. They really impressed everyone with their beautiful clear voices.
The vocalists were of a high standard and all were potential winners! The trophy for Senior contemporary vocalist went to Marelise Coetzee and the award for best contemporary vocal to Henco Bester. The best classical vocal trophy went to Jodi-Ann Michael.
The Senior Trophy for best flautist went to Marize Gouws and the Junior flautist trophy went to Carla Kruger. The George South Primary School recorder trio received the trophy for best Junior Recorder.
The First Junior award and prize money was awarded to pianist Steven Kapp.
