GEORGE NEWS - A breast cancer survivor from George, Ingrid Watkins, is looking to establish a local branch of Wings of Hope Cancer Support and to this end, a picnic is being organised for 6 November to get cancer sufferers and survivors and their families together.
Watkins was in Johannesburg when she was diagnosed and says meeting others in a similar situation made it more bearable. She received great support from Wings of Hope while she was going through this anxious period in her life.
For all cancer patients and survivors
It is a non-profit organisation that aims to educate and empower women and men on breast cancer and breast health care. Chairperson Nersan Govender says the group consists mainly of breast cancer survivors and volunteers who have experienced the importance of a supportive community.
"In the last few years the group has opened its doors to all cancer patients and survivors who need the support," he says.
In addition to the Johannesburg branch, there are also branches in Cape Town and Durban.
"The group provides a lifeline of information, support and encouragement through both good and bad days. Research has shown that support groups like Wings of Hope help reduce the three most significant stresses associated with cancer: unwanted loneliness, loss of control, and loss of hope.
"Group members understand the unique effects that being diagnosed with cancer may have on an individual, both physically and emotionally," says Govender.
Guest speakers invited to meetings include cancer surgeons, gynaecologists, cardiologists, oncologists, nutritionists, dietitians, dentists and alternative treatment specialists.
"The group emphasises that the life of a cancer patient is not all gloom and doom and encourages happy moments through its parties, picnics and storyteller programme," says Govender.
Cancer survivors and sufferers are invited to contact Ingrid Watkins on 083 345 4764 for more information.
