Update

GEORGE NEWS - The Garden Route Dam continues to show encouraging signs of recovery, with the latest figures indicating a slight increase in storage levels following another week of rainfall.

According to the latest municipal update, the Garden Route Dam is currently 95,30% full, up from 94,60% last week. 

The dam received 19,20mm of rainfall over the past week, contributing to the gradual improvement in water levels.

The Haarlem Dam is also in a healthy position, recording a level of 100,95%, compared with 101,43% the previous week, after receiving 7mm of rainfall.

Despite the positive outlook, the municipality continues to encourage residents to use water responsibly. Current daily water demand stands at 33,6 million litres, slightly above the target consumption of 33 million litres per day.

Based on current storage levels, the municipality estimates there is enough water available for 43 weeks. This figure includes only the volume of water that can be pumped and treated, with water below the intake and treatment level excluded from the calculation.

While recent rainfall has helped replenish local water resources, officials emphasise that water conservation remains essential. 

Warmer, drier months and changing weather patterns can quickly place additional pressure on water supplies, making everyday water-saving habits important throughout the year.

Residents are encouraged to continue taking simple steps to reduce consumption, such as repairing leaking taps, limiting garden watering, using water-efficient appliances where possible, and avoiding unnecessary water wastage.

By working together to keep daily demand at or below the municipal target, the community can help safeguard the region's water security and ensure a reliable supply for residents, businesses and essential services in the months ahead.
