GEORGE NEWS - Many ordinary people have phenomenal ideas but lack the ability to communicate the concepts in a concise, crisp way. This ultimately means that those ideas are lost, guest speaker Crispin Sonn told guests at George High School's 'Kollig op die Kunste' fundraiser evening on Friday 12 October.
Sonn, executive director of Gamiro Investment Group and former member of the executive committee at Old Mutual SA, said arts and culture as a subject at school is not only about a career in entertainment, as entertainment is only one component of the arts, which focuses on music, dance, comedy and drama.
Most importantly it is about telling stories using different genres. "What the arts does, it gives people the confidence and the ability to project themselves positively so that others will listen, making it possible to carve a career in a wide variety of fields. These youngsters will be able to market themselves with self-assurance."

Sonn said the community that George High serves, needs to portray a more positive image as they have a disparate history, yet they have a story to tell.
Learners took to the stage and showcased their dance, drama and singing skills.
This drama sketch had the audience in fits of laughter.
The evening ended with an auction of works of art by the talented and enthusiastic teachers and learners.
The proceeds will be used to bolster the funds to acquire the materials to make dreams a reality.
Headmaster of George High, Morton van Rooyen, said, "This evening is an opportunity for learners to market the school's art and culture classes as well as to perform on stage in front of an audience. Not all learners are academically strong, but George High accommodates and nurtures these talents, as there is a place in the job market for the arts."
With grace and elegance they wowed the audience.
