GEORGE NEWS - Young people from Ward 10 marched from Thembalethu to the George municipal buildings in York Street on Tuesday 11 September demanding that their ward councillor, Buyiswa Henge, step down. The marchers delivered their list of grievances, including allegations of fraud, to Municipal Manager Trevor Botha.
In their memorandum, the marchers say they have proof that money intended for development projects has been misappropriated. They demand that the municipality investigate these allegations.
"If there's any corruption or maladministration we want an investigation and that action must be taken. Because we will not allow any corruption in our community and George at large. The community of Ward 10 are concerned and they want to know what happened to their ward base (sic) budget of 2015/2016," reads the memorandum.
The marchers allege that a total of R150 000 allocated to projects in the ward is unaccounted for and they want answers.
After the march, the youth approached the ANC leadership, asking them to intervene and that Henge resign.
The youth also demand access to land saying they are tired of living in overcrowded family homes, renting and living in back yards.
Receiving the memorandum, Botha said these are serious allegations and that he would appoint a team of people to look into the matter and report back to the conveners of the march within seven days.
Councillor Henge told the George Herald that she had done nothing wrong and that the George Municipality is well equipped to conduct a full investigation.
