GARDEN ROUTE NEWS - A wanted suspect, Kenneth Gainsford (54), who has been on the run for nearly a decade, was arrested at his house in Wilderness on Thursday morning 20 January at about 10:00.
According to Southern Cape police spokesperson Capt Malcolm Pojie, Gainsford, who was wanted in connection with the theft of Krugerrands to the value of R7,8mil, has been on the run since 2012.
Gainsford made his first appearance in the Knysna Magistrate’s Court earlier today.
“Members followed up on information following the issuing of a warrant for his arrest by the Knysna Magistrate’s Court. The theft was allegedly perpetrated between May 2011 and 9 March 2012, when the owner of the Krugerrands gave the commodity to the suspect for safekeeping. At the time the suspect was working at a bank in Knysna and offered to safeguard the Krugerrands. When she asked for the return of the commodity, he refused to give it back. Subsequent to his refusal and the disappearance of the Krugerrands, the complainant laid a criminal complaint of theft against him,” said Pojie.
Gainsford remains in custody. His next court appearance for a formal bail application is scheduled for 27 January.
Eden Cluster Commander Brig Phumzile Cetyana has commended the investigating team and the K-9 members for their persistence to bring this suspect to book. “This shows our commitment and demonstrates the lengthy arm of the law that will stop at nothing to bring culprits as such to account for their deeds,” he said.
