GEORGE NEWS - Two visitors from Centurion became instant heroes after they saved a girl from drowning in Wilderness last Friday afternoon. Father and son, Henrico (51) and Jaden Delport (16), who were on holiday with family, were on the beach when Jaden noticed someone being swept out to sea.
According to Michael Vonk, deputy station commander of NSRI station 23 in Wilderness, Jaden immediately rushed into the surf and started swimming towards a female teenager who was being pulled out to sea.
"His dad, anxious for both his son's safety and the safety of the girl, grabbed an NSRI pink rescue buoy positioned at the entrance of the beach and ran into the water. By then Jaden had reached the girl who had been pulled out half way towards the back line," Vonk said.
The girl was exhausted from fighting the current when Jaden reached her. He tried pulling her back towards shore but the rip current was too strong to swim against.
"Henrico arrived just in time and passed the girl the pink rescue buoy to hold onto while they pulled her safely to shore."
The NSRI have not been able to get the details of the girl, but eye-witnesses, Jaden and his dad, Henrico, gave this account of the incident.
