GEORGE NEWS - The University of the Third Age is starting the new year on Friday 26 January with a talk presented by Dave Jones who will pose the question, 'Who first colonised South Africa?'
This will be an introductory talk on the broad topic of anthropology to assess the level of interest among members before starting a regular monthly series on this subject.
With a general election just around the corner this is, indeed, a thorny subject but it is an example of a research that takes us back to pre-historic times, to later historical developments and right up to the present day.
Jones is a retired science teacher and training college rector. Both he and his wife, Fay, have recently relocated to a retirement village in George. So come along and join the U3A in what promises to be a very interesting talk.
There will be refreshments at 10:00 and the talk will start promptly at 10:30.
On Monday 29 January at 14:00, Case Rijsdijk will present International Affairs where members can discuss matters of current interest. And, there is plenty of that at the moment.
At the general meeting on Wednesday 31 January, John Myburgh SC will present a talk on the topic, '1992 US presidential election: George W Bush v Bill Clinton (It’s the economy, Stupid!)'.
Again, the timing of this talk is very relevant in view of the upcoming American presidential elections.
The talk is divided into four parts covering the lives of these two candidates, their political careers, the 1992 primaries, and finally the 1992 elections.
Refreshments will be available at 10:00 and the talk will start at 10:30.
The venue for all the U3A meetings, unless otherwise stated, is Emmaüs in Memoriam Street. Visitors are always welcome.
