GEORGE NEWS - While the police and the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) are awaiting the forensic extraction of cellphone evidence, a man in his early 20s from George, suspected of statutory rape, has been released on bail.
According to Southern Cape police spokesperson Sgt Chris Spies, the George Family violence, Child protection and Sexual offences (FCS) unit is investigating a sexual assault case reported to the police during August 2022.
It is alleged that the man sexually assaulted the 13-year-old victim from the Wilderness area between June and August 2022.
"Investigation led to the arrest of the suspect who was later released," said Spies. At this stage there is no information available of his involvement with any other cases or victims.
Spokesperson for the NPA Eric Ntabazalila confirmed the investigation and said charges against the accused include sexual grooming and statutory rape.
"He was released on bail of R1 000 with conditions that he is not allowed to communicate directly or indirectly with the complainant or her family members," Ntabazalila said.
More bail conditions, such as not being allowed to work with children, could be added during his next court appearance.
He was warned to appear in the Thembalethu Regional Court on Monday 19 June. This is a developing story and more information will be made available as it is confirmed.
Great caution is taken to not identify the minor victim directly or indirectly.
