UNIONDALE NEWS - More than 100 animals in need were sterilised in Uniondale on 24 and 25 April during a spay-a-thon hosted by George Municipality and executed through the joint efforts of a number of stakeholders and members of the public.
The joint outreach initiative took off last year, following a request from the SPCA George for assistance in this area. Uniondale is a small farming town with approximately 4 500 residents and they have no access to constant veterinary care.
SPCA George has an outreach programme in Uniondale and provides basic care. However, with no access to a sterilisation programme, animal welfare can't be addressed fully.
To be able to spay as many animals as possible, the Uniondale Civic Centre was converted into an animal hospital.
The spay-a-thon was coordinated by Uniondale resident and local SPCA representative Tish Cummings, with the help of Ricardo Classen of Uniondale Tourism who acquired sponsorships for accommodating the volunteers.
The Uniondale Civic Centre was converted into an animal hospital to spay as many as possible animals in need.
With SPCA screening and the assistance of Cummings, 130 animals in the community that needed to be sterilised were identified.
A competent team of veterinarians, both private and from the state, were supported by members of the Uniondale community.
