GEORGE NEWS - Soul Food George delivers food items and enable soup kitchens and community centres to feed their communities every day in the George area and the surrounding regions, but on 18 July, Soul Food regional manager Esra Isaacs and his team along with his valued suppliers had special treats for the Outeniqua Research Farm (Proefplaas) community for Mandela Day.
Community members - especially the young ones - couldn't believe their eyes when Isaacs and his team laid out the table for Outeniqua Research Farms residents. A wide variety of delicious goodies donated from valued suppliers in George were on offer and readily accepted and devoured.
Isaacs and his trusty red Soul Food truck, affectionately named Harry, makes numerous trips in and around George ensuring residents are served meals and receive treats on a daily basis, either directly from his Soul Food van or through the community centers and soup kitchens he helps regularly.
"But on Mandela Day, it is all about treats and celebrations," said Isaacs as he served ice-cream to young and old. "It is a pleasure to bring joy to this community," he said, "I am grateful to my sponsors who always assist with no hesitation."
Soul Food is a registered non-profit organisation and is part of The Soul Provider Trust, which was established to nourish and feed the soul and the bodies through their feeding programmes.
It has been running for over 12 years and has grown from strength to strength, with the help of generous donations and corporate sponsorships, including much-appreciated support from corporations as well as private donations from the general public.
Soul Food collects surplus food, together with donations from farms and food manufacturers, and distributes these donations along with their Soul Seed boxes (a vegetable seed kit), that enable recipients to grow their own food.
The food items and seed boxes are then distributed through the Soul Food regional managers to hundreds of distribution points like schools, churches, council offices, orphanages, shelters, old age homes and places of refuge.
Soul Food regions are reliant on their community businesses and are thankful for businesses and farmers who readily donate surplus food and stock, which is then distributed to the communities in their well-known Soul Food red trucks.
