GEORGE NEWS - With winter around the corner, learners of Geelhoutboom Primary were excited last week to each receive a scarf and a pair of mittens knitted and donated by a group of caring knitters of the Beanie Project.
In total, they knitted 129 mittens and 137 scarves to help children from this rural school keep warm.
The project is spearheaded by a resident of the Geelhoutboom area, Lizelle Burger, who started it in response to a need in the farming community.
The group has grown from 16 participants last year to 36 this year.
Burger thanked various people who donated cash to buy wool and sweets to make up a packet of treats for each child. She also thanked Nicola Sole through whose efforts a lot of people became involved and helped make the project a success.
"We look forward to the next project. Any donations will be most welcome, be it towards the cost of the wool or your time to knit or crochet," said Burger.
She may be contacted on 072 310 2783.
