GEORGE NEWS - Residents living near the banks of the Mitchell River in Madeliefie Street, Denneoord, have grown accustomed to regular visits from the municipal sewerage division to a seeping manhole on the edge of the river. George Herald reported on the matter two weeks ago (10 September, p. 12).
It seems that tree roots might indeed be the reason for the frequent sewage spills in the river, as one resident suggested.
Spokesperson Chantel Edwards-Klose said the sewer pipelines that are affected by root infiltration have been identified for replacement, subject to available funding. Meanwhile, the pipelines affected are given interim treatment with chemicals that restrict and remove root growth.
"The sewer line blockage in Madeliefie Street has been opened. The municipality is reliant on residents to report blockages when noticed and will act on reports as soon as possible," said Edwards-Klose.
