GEORGE NEWS - It is no secret that the Outeniqua Pass should be treated with caution when it is raining and the road is wet.
The road becomes slippery and motorists are continuously cautioned to reduce their travel speed in bad weather.
Unfortunately, shortly after the rain started on Sunday afternoon, 29 January, three accidents took place on the pass within an hour.
In the first incident the driver of a taxi that was travelling from Oudtshoorn to George, lost control of his vehicle and crashed through the barrier wall. The driver was the only occupant and did not sustain any serious injuries.
The taxi came to a standstill some metres down the mountain face. CMS Towing responded to the scene and the vehicle was recovered.
The taxi was towed away.
While the towing service was still on scene, two unrelated incidents followed within minutes from each other when the drivers of a Ford Figo and a Nissan 1400 bakkie both lost control of their vehicles and crashed into the barrier wall of the pass.
No serious injuries were reported and the vehicles were towed away successfully.
The most recent incident on the pass occurred at about 08:30 on Wednesday 1 February. A truck carrying cooldrink lost its load on the pass.
It is believed that the load shifted on the truck, which caused an imbalance.
No injuries were reported and a stop-and-go system was put in place until the scene was cleared.
