Annually, Mediclinic George and Mediclinic Geneva bestow this honour to a nursing staff member in recognition of her commitment to the spirit of nursing.
The annual celebration coincided with Florence Nightingale's birthday and was held at the George Golf Club, during which tri-bute was paid to the profession. "Mediclinic George and Mediclinic Geneva therefore take this opportunity to recognise the role our nursing practitioners play in our patient-centred culture," said George Schutte, the Mediclinic hospital manager. He invited nurses present to renew their pledge to service excellence by signing a commemorative poster.
"This year we want to honour our own shining lights and celebrate our nurses for being experts in their fields, for how they apply their knowledge and expertise to ensure patient safety and comfort. It is also the day where a nursing practitioner at each hospital is chosen as the Nursing Excellence Award recipient by her peers and patients," said Estelle Jordaan, the nursing executive at Mediclinic Southern Africa.
"Although we can only select one person for the award, I would like to take this opportunity to acknowledge each of our nursing practitioners for their invaluable contribution to enhancing the quality of life of our patients by providing comprehensive, world-class care," she concluded.
The award was handed over to Andrea Rothner, a theatre sister with two-and-a-half years' service with Mediclinic. Two colleagues were named as runners-up. They are Felicity Botha, who has 22 years service as professional nurse, and Leonie Muller, an ICU nurse with six years service with Mediclinic.
