Thirty-five awards were made to students or student societies that had excelled across all spheres of student life.
Awards were made in the categories, (male and female) of Student Governance and Development, Arts and Culture, Student Residences and Sport and Overall Student Leadership - a highlight being the Campus Principal Leadership Excellence Award.
The ultimate winners in this prestigious category was Thomas Mthethwa (male category), a Science Faculty student at the School of Natural Resource Management. Mthethwa was vice-captain of the Madibaz Soccer Team Committee last year and has been playing for the team since 2012. He has also gained international exposure when, as a George Campus representative, he made a presentation on 'Wetlands Management in South Africa' at a congress in Spain last year.
Rochelle van Rooyen (female category), a third year BEd (FET) student and chairman of the thriving SuperEd student society, which she founded, has organised various vibrancy and engagement events, both on and off campus including Shoe Donation Week and 'Die Bult Talent Showcase', was the winner in the female category. Van Rooyen has an excellent academic track record, having qualified for a Merit Award for outstanding academic performance annually during the past two years.
They were both acknowledged for their proven leadership in various spheres and significant contributions to student life. In addition to the Campus Principal Leadership Excellence Award, both received a book prize. The book Nelson Mandela Conversations with Myself isn't so much a book as a literary album, containing snippets of Mandela's life, shards from diaries, calendars, letters and transcripts from 50 hours of recordings by Richard Stengel.
The Sport Club of the Year Award went to NMMU George Cricket Club. The club has five members that represent the SWD Senior Cricket Team. The NMMU George Sportsman of the Year 2014 was scooped by seasoned cricketer Lyndon Volkwyn.
Roxy Giles, the number one ranked lady in student surfing in South Africa, took the honours as the NMMU George Sportswoman of the Year 2014 for the second consecutive year.
The students themselves bore testimony to their diverse talents by welcoming guests and executing the functions of master of ceremonies and presenting the cultural programme for this gala evening event.
Professor Quinton Johnson, the George Campus principal, delivered an inspiring address to the more than 100 guests saying that the Global Leadership Institute for Sustainable Futures will be housed at the NMMU George Campus.
