GEORGE NEWS - Nokwakha Zakade (59) whose family home in Ntaka Street, Zone 1 in Thembalethu burned down a month ago, will soon have a new home for herself, her husband (81) and three grandchildren.
A number of private companies had taken hands to help the family, and on Wednesday 24 July the Western Cape Minister of Human Settlements, Bonginkosi Madikizela, accompanied by George Mayor Melvin Naik and other private sector stakeholders, visited Thembalethu to oversee the start of construction on their new home.
In an article published on Friday 6 July, George Herald sister paper Idinga reported that Zakade had lost everything when her house burned down. Zakade found her home engulfed in flames when she arrived back from church.
The cause of the fire is not known and no one was injured in the incident. After the fire they had to move in with their in-laws who reside in Borcherds. The calamity has put the couple, who are on chronic medication, in a financial predicament.
The companies assisting the family are Horatius Strydom from HAS Consulting Pty (Developer), Zuksem Projects, Tusk Construction Support Services, Builders Warehouse and Standard Bank.
Speaking at this event, Madikizela thanked everyone who contributed in assisting the couple, especially Strydom, who brought together the team of private sector businessess to assist the family. The elderly couple couldn't be happier as the construction of their new home is underway.
