GEORGE NEWS - It's been just over a year since George Mayor Leon van Wyk was inaugurated on 22 May 2020, less than a month after the country entered lockdown.
Looking back at the last 12 months, Van Wyk shares his thoughts on the recent past and the future of the town during these uncertain times.
Asked about his first thoughts on his year in office as mayor, Van Wyk said they went through a baptism of fire with councillors being absent from their duties in terms of the Code of Conduct for Councillors, which resulted in High Court action.
"Thereafter we dealt with many challenges: tabling of investigative reports and resultant actions flowing therefrom; poor levels of refuse collection; the Covid-19 pandemic and closure of beaches in December impacting so badly on our tourism economy, and tackling our bulk infrastructure capacity limitations."
Proud moment
Van Wyk describes the appointment of Dr Michelle Gratz as Acting Municipal Manager as one of his proudest memories.
"Her appointment provided the 'turnaround moment' for George as we were then in a position to start the management process to restore levels of service delivery and administrative processes.
"Some very tough and bold decisions have been made which have provided momentum for the turnaround."
Asked whether the pandemic changed him as a person and the way he tackles challenges, Van Wyk answered as follows:
"The pandemic meant that one needed to remain calm, keep perspective, be philosophical about what could be achieved.
"Hindsight is a perfect science, we have learnt about a different way of life that continues to have uncertainty. I believe many officials acquitted themselves well during this crisis."
Looking ahead
Asked what makes him excited about the town's future, Van Wyk said he is receiving feedback that the service delivery standards are improving.
"We are seeing this in the work that the Monitoring Committee is doing as well. George is tackling the management of its budget and how capital expenditure will be dealt with methodically and strategically. This will provide the infrastructure that attracts investment and jobs. I believe this approach will stand us in good stead," he said.
"George is an extremely attractive investment destination within South Africa.
"We are seeing 'green shoots' of interest that will, I believe, result in above average economic growth in the next year or two. The turnaround will take time, but the strategy is there."
Million dollar question
If the mayor had to choose essentials to take with him on a deserted island, it would be his wife Gail, mosquito repellent, matches, and an axe/sturdy knife.
"I believe that George Herald would provide the food and refreshments!"
