GEORGE NEWS - A number of interesting lectures hosted by the University of the Third Age (U3A) are still to be enjoyed during March.
On Friday 18 March, Mike and Jill Holland will continue their talk about their travels in the Pyrenees and South of France, including the route of the Tour de France, where they discovered the heartbreaking history of the Cathars and their extermination.
The castles they built for their defence on the most precipitous mountaintops are still a wonder to behold. Tea is at 10:00 and the lecture starts at 10:30.
On Monday 28 March, at 14:00, Natie de Swardt will give his informative and thought-provoking presentation of International Affairs.
At the general meeting on Wednesday 30 March, Case Rijsdijk will break away from astronomy and deliver a lecture entitled "Economics". This is a light-hearted look at things we know without realising that we do.
We go through life doing things routinely, maybe based on what our parents did. This routine is often exploited by "Big Business". He will also look at our expectations of things we take for granted and do without thought. Tea is at 10:00 and the lecture starts at 10:30.
The first lecture in April will be Armchair Travel on Wednesday the 13th, when Joggie van Staden will talk about "The Richtersveld - South Africa's Arid Wonderland". Joggie is a plant ecologist and environmental scientist as well as a freelance photographer specialising in wildlife and the landscape. Tea is at 10:00 and the lecture starts at 10:30.
Keep Friday 22 April open for a very special lecture.
All the lectures are held at the Moth hall in Rijk Tulbach Street. Attendees are requested to wear masks and adhere to the Covid restrictions. The entrance fee is R10 for members and R20 for visitors.
