GARDEN ROUTE NEWS - After being deprived of their annual art competition during the 2020 pandemic, the Scava (South Cape Association for the Visual Arts) organisers, together with the committee of the Friends of the George Museum, have made plans for their challenging event to take place four weeks from now.
All artists of the Southern Cape and Little Karoo are invited to enter. If you are an artist and live within 250 kilometres of George, you may wish to submit your artwork and let it shine amongst its peers.
Judging will cover five recognised categories: landscape / interior, portraiture, wildlife / animal, still life, and abstract. The abstract category covers all genres from modernism, expressionism, surrealism and symbolism to the latest trend in crazy. Artworks are expected from the lovers of charcoal, pencil, pen and ink, oils, acrylics pastels watercolours and gauche.
There will be three generous cash prizes in each category and many non-cash prizes for several merit awards.
This Visual Expressions art competition is a well-known and much patronised event. It is challenging, revealing and fun. All artists in the region look forward to the feel-good moment when presented with a first prize.
It brings artists together; the buzz is heart-warming, and the resulting exhibition attracts visitors and art lovers from all over the country.
Entries
Art submitted must have been completed within the last calendar year. Entry forms are available in art supply stores throughout the region, the art gallery of the George Museum, directly from the Scava website or by contacting any artist member of Scava.
Artworks usually arrive from as far away as Hermanus in the west and Plettenberg Bay in the east. From the north you will see submissions from Oudtshoorn, De Rust and possibly Calitzdorp and Prince Albert.
After judging, there will be a gala awards ceremony in the art gallery of the George Museum. The organisers will only be able to give more information closer to the date because of Covid-19 restrictions on the number of people who may be present.
The exhibition will be on show and open to the public for viewing and sales from 18 March onwards.
Dates of entry are Thursday and Friday, 11 and 12 March, from 09:00 till 13:00 and Saturday 13 March from 09:00 to 12:00.
The entry fee is R50 per entry. Scava members pay R30 per artwork.
