GEORGE NEWS - After 18 years at the Garden Route SPCA (GRSPCA) seeing severe and appalling acts of animal cruelty, GRSPCA head inspector, Salomé Bruyns and her team, were shocked to the core when they received video footage of a dog being tied up and beaten in Parkdene earlier this week.
"She was screaming her lungs out as her owner just kept on beating her with a pickaxe handle. And this for stealing food because she was hungry. I have to admit I couldn't watch the whole video and that's a first for me," said an emotional Bruyns.
Trainee inspector Vanessa Lucas received the call and video on Sunday 13 June and went out immediately. When she arrived at the house the suspect allegedly stood in his yard ready and waiting for her with a pair of scissors.
She immediately called the police but he ran away with the dog across the N2 into the Thembalethu squatter camp. She went to search for them, but couldn't find them.
"Lucas went to lay charges on Sunday and the police found the suspect and the dog, Sadie, at home and contacted us. We immediately removed her. Sadie's soul is clearly broken but we promised her that nobody will ever hurt her again. Charges have been laid under the Animals Protection Act and the case is now in the hands of the police," said Bruyns.
Sadie is emaciated and suffers from mange. Any donations towards Sadie's recovery will be accepted with open arms.
Conville Police station commander, Col AB Kriga, confirmed that their station is investigating the case.
"According to eyewitnesses and a video that was made, the owner of the dog can be seen beating the dog repeatedly. The injured dog is at the SPCA receiving treatment and the investigation continues," said Kriga.
No arrest has been made.
Anyone with information regarding the incident is asked to contact the investigating officer, Sgt Geldenhuys, on 044 803 3318.
