Generally, properties are large so manicured gardens are difficult to maintain - especially while trying to cope with nature's creatures like bushbuck, baboons and bushpig. What they do offer is gardens individually designed to live in harmony with our indigenous forests and fynbos.
This year they are proud to show 12 stunning gardens. You can view a natural swimming pond, a bonsai garden, olive tree labyrinth, an organic vegetable garden and spekboom succulent nursery. There are pretty gardens with lots of colour, roses, herbs and even a cattery as part of the garden.
Landowners have cleared invasive aliens like wattle and pine, opening up spectacular views with an abundance of bird life, e.g. Hildesheim Guesthouse is a haven of tranquility and the interesting church and pastorie garden offers a surprise around each corner. Oakhurst Farm has trails through the indigenous forest, which can be enjoyed for a donation. A lovely tea garden offers delicious refreshments for sale. These proceeds will go towards Hoekwil Primary.
Refreshments are also offered at Hoekwil Deli opposite the post office.
Tickets and maps will be available at R30 per person from the Open Garden Kiosk at Hoekwil Post Office on the corner of Duiwerivier and Kerk streets. If it is a rainy day put on your gumboots and bring your umbrellas. They are proud to open their gardens to lovers of nature.
