Update
GEORGE NEWS - Following a discussion this morning between local lifeguards and George Municipality, an agreement was reached regarding lifeguards’ remuneration.
A new pay rate of R300 has been offered – R50 more than the previous offer of R250, which was in fact the lowest offer in eight years.
A lifeguard who previously expressed his bitter disappointment in the first wage offer, sent the following text with a heartfelt emoji after the morning’s negotiations: “Super happy and excited for the season.”
In a statement released this afternoon, George Municipality said a new recruitment process will be followed for the implementation of the new rate: “George Municipality confirms that all seven beach points, including the public swimming pools, are now all ready for operation.
Lifeguards have been deployed at Victoria Bay, Herold’s Bay and Wilderness beaches with immediate effect. Other beaches will be covered as and when required, in terms of the expected number of people on the beaches.
“All the pilot blue flag beaches will have a minimum of four lifeguards and will increase as required in terms of weather and estimated expected numbers of beachgoers per day. Meanwhile, an advertisement will be issued today to have more lifeguards on the beaches, this will be an opportunity for more people to apply. The closing date for the new advertisement is 7 December 2022.”
