GEORGE NEWS - A multi-million generator project at the Garden Route Mall will power up the centre in full by early 2020.
Planning started in July with the appointment of Clinkscales Maughan-Brown as consultant and a capital budget of R19-million. According to general manager Rion Olivier, it has been quite a challenge to plan for the installation of 12 generators, as the mall was not originally designed with this in mind.
"The first batch arrived on 19 November and we were fortunate that we could commission six of the 12 generators before load shedding began on Friday evening. The remaining generators will be installed and delivered early in 2020."
The installation has allowed 70% of the mall's tenants, including restaurants, to trade during load shedding from Sunday 8 December onwards.
The generators start up seamlessly, so there is no dip in power when load shedding starts. The public and tenants will therefore not even pick up the interruption of power from the grid. While the generators are in use, only fresh air can be supplied via the air-conditioning plants. "We believe this is a small discomfort," says Olivier.
The mall will soon be fully powered by 12 of these generators.
Ster-Kinekor will however have full air-conditioning since it has enclosed theatres.
"We want to take the opportunity to thank the professional team that has been working on the project: Clinkscales Maughan-Brown, MDL Engineering Co, WJ Civils, Engine Co, FRA, and Landis and Staefa," says Olivier.
