GEORGE NEWS - According to Walter Hendricks, Director of Community Services, the Parks and Recreation section arranged to have the Kariba weed on the Garden Route Dam sprayed during the first week of June.
A specialist contractor was appointed to control the weed as fast as possible.
The weed takes six to seven days to react to the environmentally friendly herbicide that has no effect on other life forms.
The plant turns yellow when dead and drops to the bottom of the dam where it will disintegrate.
Follow up treatments are already being done where necessary.
After a six-week period, a biocontrol insect will be introduced that will further reduce this pest. The insect only eats weed and has to be reintroduced.
