GEORGE NEWS - The Garden Route Botanical Garden on Monday 3 August opened its gates for the public.
No social gathering, picnics or public events will be allowed. It is open for exercise only.
This follows an announcement by the Department of Environment, Forestry and Fisheries on 30 July that South Africa's botanical gardens may reopen after a four-month closure due to the Covid-19 lockdown.
The garden was already open to members at the weekend.
"Our team has been working hard during lockdown to complete current projects in the garden and start new projects, to increase the variety of plant species we have in the garden, and the variety of plants available at our indigenous nursery," said Corné Brink, the manager.
"Only the Protea entrance gate will be open from 07:30 till 18:00 daily. The entrance fee has been increased as a consequence of having to increase gate staff to manage health and safety protocols put in place for Covid-19. Entrance costs R20 for a non-member."
Persons who wish to become a member, may visit the office.
Visitors must wear a mask covering their nose and mouth, sanitise their hands using sanitiser that is supplied, and allow their temperature to be taken upon entering. There is a register and anyone entering must sign in with their name and contact number and record their temperature, and they have to sign out.
