GEORGE NEWS - A special birthday party was held at Lyttleton Frail Care in George to celebrate the 100th birthday of Guil (Guiletta) Wepener, who was born 10 December 1917 in Volksrust.
Family members from as far afield as Botswana and Namibia were there to celebrate this milestone.
Guil was the daughter of the state vet who died an early death during the great flu of 1918.
The family moved to Malmesbury, where her mother had grown up and Guil finished school here.
She qualified as a nurse in Pretoria and moved with her new husband, Marais Wepener, to the Copperbelt in then Northern Rhodesia.
Here she had her two daughters, Maryke (who lives in Francistown, Botswana) and Karin (who lives in Windhoek, Namibia.) Marais and Guil retired to George in 1977.
Marais, who was an avid naturalist and started the Southern Cape branch of the archaeological society, resided at Lyttleton until he passed away in 2007.
Guil Wepener's 100th birthday was a joyous celebration. Family members came from Botswana and Namibia to be part of this special occasion.
Guil was an avid artist, gardener and shell collector. Her collection was acquired by the Mossel Bay Museum. She was also a keen bridge player who often won the local championships.
Her 100th-birthday party was celebrated with her two daughters and their husbands, four grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
The staff at Lyttleton and Terry Terblanche from George were thanked for their kindness and support that helped Guil her reach this incredible milestone.
