The Waste Minimisation Roadshow started at the Bitou Municipality last Monday 1 September and ended in Mossel Bay on Tuesday. Lunchbox Theatre, a drama group from Plettenberg Bay, gave a performance at the official opening in George last Wednesday in the Banquet Hall. The aim of the roadshow was to create public awareness and serve as an education campaign.
The roadshow was hosted by Eden District Municipality, in collaboration with the other local municipalities in Bitou, George, Hessequa, Knysna, Mossel Bay and Oudtshoorn.
"It was also a marketing opportunity for the waste management industry," said Chantel Edwards-Klose, the George Municipality's media liaison officer.
According to some of the exhibitors at the Banquet Hall in George, the exhibition was poorly attended by both the public and local schools. "Representatives of only two schools pitched for the whole day," said one of the exhibitors.
"During the opening about 50 people attended. Some exhibitors even left very early in the day."
According to this exhibitor, who wishes to remain anonymous, the roadshows in Knysna and Bitou were very well attended. Eden District Municipality didn't reply before going to press on questions regarding the marketing procedures in George.
Although the exhibition was supposed to stay open until 19:00, most exhibitors had already left by 14:00 due to the poor attendance.
Private exhibitors who took part during the roadshow in George included companies such as Ma'bone-E-Waste, Vermiculture and Greencoat eco paint.
