GEORGE NEWS - A 49-year-old accused, charged with dealing in drugs and illegal possession of medicines, was sentenced in the George Regional Court on Friday 10 December.
Ogugua Ernest Owoh, who pleaded guilty on both charges, was sentenced to eight years imprisonment on the first count and five years on the second by Magistrate Emma Moloro. This effectively puts him behind bars for 13 years.
According to Southern Cape police spokesperson, Capt Malcolm Pojie, Owoh was arrested on a long-distance passenger bus near George in March 2016.
"During the search that ensued, police found 4,8kg of tik and 974g of Benzocaine in his possession. The find subsequently led to his arrest and eventually his conviction," he said.
The Western Cape police management welcomed his conviction and sentence. Provincial management also praised the members for their vigilance and vigorous execution of their duties in ensuring a conviction.
Western Cape Commissioner Lt-Genl Thembisile Patekile said he hopes that this stern sentence will send a strong message to would-be drug traffickers.
"It is a clear indication that the police are always a step ahead of these perpetrators and they will face the full might of the law when arrested," he said.
