GEORGE NEWS - The George Municipality in partnership with the University of Stellenbosch's disabled sports section held an exhibition of sports for the disabled at the Conville Civic Centre on Saturday 15 July. The aim of this event is to make sports facilities available and accessible for people living with disabilities and to give those who, due to disability, have never had the opportunity to play sport, exposure to a variety of sports.
Some of the sports included were goal ball for blind people, wheelchair rugby, bocce ball and blind cricket.
Speaking at the exhibition, George portfolio councillor for Community and Social Development Services Sean Snyman said the municipality has recognised that there's a shortage of sports facilities in George for people with disabilities.
"We are trying to facilitate the development of disabled people's sports and to exhibit different sports and create interest with those who would like to take part in these sports. The end goal is to create a disabled people's sports league and to create an academy where we can educate and train people with disabilities in different sporting codes," said Snyman.
