"In fact, we will even do our utmost to interact with the bogus traditional surgeons and try to convince them that our slogan 'use your culture to protect your health' is the only way forward to ensure that the necessary competency, safety and quality of traditional healthcare services are practised."
Level 1 first aid certificates were distributed to those surgeons that have completed the course.
The department also handed out uniforms to the traditional surgeons and the traditionally trained nurses or Ikhankatha.
Mzuzuz Mofu, an ingcibi, said he is thankful for what is happening. "We are recognised and respected in our culture and now the broader community will be able to identify us as well. All surgeons must stand together. Our record in George this past season was excellent. Hopefully our problems that we have had are a thing of the past."
Khumbuzile Magobo urges the people of Thembalethu to take note of the forum and to take ownership of it, thereby ensuring that it continues to serve the community.
Mzwandile Gingcana the organiser of the forum acknowledged the role of the George Herald in informing the Xhosa community that woman and child headed households can contact the forum for help. "Out of respect for our culture a woman will not interfere in the traditional activities of men regarding circumcisions.
Now they have an avenue open to them to continue with our traditions according to the rules.
Lots of people have come forward requesting assistance, which has resulted in the community being able to distinguish between the genuine ingcibis and the bogus ones."
