Standers was watching a group of toddlers from the Siembamba Crèche dancing and singing in the Parkdene Community Hall on Thursday where the municipality, as a gesture of goodwill, handed out essential bits and pieces to ease the financial burden of the crèches.
"I was a teacher for 16 years before entering politics and could easily identify those children that went to preschool crèches as their grounding was just that much better. Today we are giving recognition to the vital role that the educators play in the community by handing out the tools that you need to execute your duties with the passion you display despite the challenges."
Councillor Marchell Kleynhans, the portfolio councillor for social development, opened the programme and introduced the mayor. Standers was so impressed with the performance of the children that he said he wanted to encourage that the talent and flair in the community be recognised at an early age. "A talent contest will bring out the best in the children and the teachers can use the opportunity to increase the quality of their teaching. The social department of the municipality will coordinate the event."
Council has budgeted an amount of R50 000
to support the eight municipal crèches. Policy dictates strict criteria as to how the money may be spent.
