GEORGE NEWS – The George municipality has apologised for any inconvenience caused by a Pay Your Fine roadblock held earlier today, 4 January.
This was after a reader contacted the George Herald about the road block and raised concern.
According to the reader it was set up opposite the old Rademachers, heading west to George and the N2. It was there from at least 9:30 and lasted till 11:00.
The reader said traffic has been severely held up. At some stages, the tailback extended to Kaaimans.
According to him given the volume of traffic, the fact that so many people are on their way home, and vehicles packed with turning holidaymakers, it is amongst other an abuse of their power and frankly has put lives at risk by causing this unnecessary delay.
It was also dangerous because of the weather at the time.
"Many of these returning holidaymakers are coming from far afield back to the N2, and I’m guessing, but probably no more than a few per cent of the motorists will have fines.
"This is just dumb, dangerous, arrogant and someone needs to be accountable!
"I have raised this with the municipality and have just been informed that the PYF has gone and the Traffic police have gone back to traffic control which is what they should be doing anyway.
"I fully understand the PYF principle, BUT this process today just ignores any good sense, care or responsibility towards our motorists, just abuse of their powers and a lack of concern!"
Janine Wells, Manager: Traffic and Licensing, George Municipality in response to the George Herald inquiry this afternoon said:” George Municipality acknowledges the concerns raised regarding the 'pay your fines' bus and sincerely apologises for any inconvenience caused. We understand and empathise with road users who experienced delays during the operation.
“The 'pay your fines' bus is a crucial component of our fine collection strategy and execution of warrants of arrest for the Municipality. There are several outstanding fines from residents who live outside the George area. This is the most effective strategy to collect those fines.
“Unfortunately, any traffic operation inherently causes delays as it requires thorough checks for the quality of this essential service. The delay to motorists is regretted but it was no more than a few minutes. Regardless of when and where such operations occur, they unavoidably inconvenience motorists. Please be assured it is not our intention to cause disruption, and we are committed to minimising travel disturbances as much as possible.
“We urge the public to always adhere to road rules, and we appreciate your cooperation.”
