GEORGE NEWS - A new non-profit organisation, Parkdene Community Development Project (PCDP), was recently registered to establish an internet café to bring much-needed office and internet services to learners, students and the public in general.
The founder, Wilmy Bartman Blaauw, says while she was employed before the Covid pandemic struck, she used her lunch hour to help people with lamination, send emails and type and print CVs.
"I realised back then what huge need there is for this type of service as more and more people began asking me for help. It is my aim to make these services more accessible by bringing them closer to home in Parkdene and the surrounding neighbourhoods," says Bartman-Blaauw.
She has brought on board Freddy Trout as chairman of the board and Wayne Windvoël as deputy chairman. These two brothers have many years of community service experience through their own organisation, People Against Substance Abuse.
Other members on the board are Charmain Brander (additional member), Shahida Klaasen (secretary) and Susan Arends (treasurer).
"We currently offer limited services such as typing and printing of CVs and sending of emails, but we trust we will soon be able to do more. Assistance in acquiring office equipment and Wi-Fi would be much appreciated.
"Perhaps there are businesses out there who are able to sell equipment to us at reduced prices. If so, I kindly request that they contact me."
PCDP is currently operating from a temporary site at 21572, Maraiskamp. Their registration number is 262-478.
