PLETTENGERG BAY NEWS - Bitou local Rodney Grosskopff will take residents and visitors back more than 120 years with the story of the ill-fated Jameson Raid which took place in Krugersdorp.
The Jameson Raid, led by Dr Leander Starr Jameson on 29 December 1895, remains one of the great mysteries and controversies of British imperial history.
Set against the discovery of gold in Paul Kruger's Transvaal Republic in 1884 and the resulting influx of foreigners intent on making their fortunes, the consequences of this ill-judged raid raised tensions between Cecil John Rhodes and Paul Kruger.
"It was undoubtedly a contributory cause of the Anglo-Boer War which changed the course of South Africa's history and affected many lives," says Grosskopf, who is not only a keen historian, but a well-known figure in Plettenberg Bay.
Many have been entertained by the memorable characters he has played in Plett's Bitou Amateur Theatrical Society (Bats) productions under the direction of David Hall-Green.
The event is scheduled to take place at 18:00 on 17 August at Formosa Garden Village. Tickets cost R150 per person and include refreshments.
Tickets can be purchased online through Quicket or in person at Barney's Kiosk in Market Square.
