GEORGE NEWS - The 107 learners of Geelhoutboom Primary farm school last week each received a warm, hand-knitted beanie in their school colours, thanks to community donations and kind knitters in the George area.
The project is spearheaded by Geelhoutboom resident Lizelle Burger, who got the idea after seeing the children walking to school on cold winter mornings in June.
Initially thinking she could knit all the beanies herself, she soon realised that there were far more children than she thought. The cost of wool and time-consuming knitting made it just too big a project for one person.
With the invaluable help of a friend, Nicola Sole, a message was placed on the Outeniqualand Farm Watch WhatsApp group where a sizeable donation was made by an anonymous donor family to cover most of the wool.
The Wool Studio also gave a discount on the bulk purchase and donated wool itself.
At least 25 knitters lovingly tackled the enormous project to help knit the beanies.
Two months later, the beanies were ready. They were handed out to the children on Wednesday 4 July, along with snacks and cold drinks donated by the Burger and anonymous families.
"I cannot thank everyone enough for their help, kindness and effort. This project is proof that teamwork and the generosity of our community can help the less fortunate and warm people's hearts in these trying times," said Burger. "A little can go a long way in making a huge difference."
Burger is now seeking donations to enable them to knit warm scarves for each learner at the school.
"So far, we have received kind donations to purchase 24 balls of wool, but we still need to buy another 85 balls to complete the project and would appreciate any assistance to do so."
Anyone who is able to help, may contact Burger on 072 310 2783.
Learners of Geelhoutboom VGK Primary were very happy to don their new, bright blue beanies.
