GEORGE NEWS - The alcohol testing evidence centre that opened in York Street last month had just over 125 visitors in its first month.
According to Quinton Williams, centre manager, 12 people tested positive of whom 10 were arrested.
Williams said they test between 15 and 20 people a day.
Western Cape MEC for transport and public works Robin Carlisle and South African Breweries launched the centre to ensure that blood tests for drunken drivers are conducted quickly and efficiently. Test results with the dräger breathalyzer alcohol test, which is used at the centre, is available almost immediately and evidence can stand up in court.
A full bench of judges will be sitting in the Cape Town High Court on 3 March to decide on the legality of the breathalyzer test.
This will lead to the speedy sentencing of drunk drivers, cutting the time wasted in courts on these cases by more than half.
SAB sponsored this R1-million centre, the second of its kind to be established in the Western Cape.
Carlisle warned drunk drivers in the area that they would be under more scrutiny than before from enforcement authorities and said drunk drivers are one of the two biggest causes of unnecessary loss of innocent lives on our roads.
