GEORGE NEWS - Two neglected and starved animals were found in the rural areas around George during the latest SPCA outreach. The inspectors came across an extremely thin rabbit which was living in horrible conditions in a small, dirty bird cage.
They removed the rabbit and it is now recovering at the SPCA.
They also came across an emaciated wirehair female dog on a chain. She was so weak she could hardly stand. She and her two puppies were removed from the property and a case of cruelty to animals was opened against the owners.
At first the little dog couldn't muster the strength to walk, but good feeding and loving care helped her regain her strength and she began to walk after two days.
A rabbit confined in horrific conditions in a small bird cage was rescued during a recent outreach.
She is improving daily and is now ready to be adopted by a loving family. Videos of her progress are on the GR SPCA Facebook page at www.facebook.com/GRSPCA.
Regular outreaches
Garden Route SPCA inspectors and their education unit do regular outreaches in outlying areas that have no animal welfare organisations. Recently they went to Uniondale, Haarlem, Nolshalte and Herold. During these outreaches they give advice, vaccinate and de-worm dogs and cats and collect sick and injured animals to take back to George for treatment. They also hand out small food parcels, from their "Inja bakkies" project. When the weather permits, they dip the dogs to prevent tick and mange outbreaks.
One of the most valuable services they offer is the education of animal owners. They point out harsh practices and step in where cruelty is observed. SPCA outreaches are vital to the many animals in need in these poor areas and with your help they can do even more. Please consider donating to this cause.
...and this is how two days of TLC improved her condition.
