GEORGE NEWS - Maura St.John, chairman of the South Cape Association for Visual Arts (Scava) travelled to Cape Town to a glittering red carpet celebration to receive an award from the Department of Culture, Arts and Sport.
It was for being the 'Active Volunteer of the Year' in the Museums, Heritage and Geographical Names sector.
The department recognised her outstanding contribution and dedication towards the development of the George Museum Art Gallery.
St.John is also a committee member of the Friends of the George Museum Association. Once renovations to the building have been completed, her trophy will be on view to the public in a special glass case in the Sayers Art Gallery.
Once a year (except during Covid) the department singles out exceptional talent or generous effort, time and commitment to further the field of culture and arts in many sectors. Fields included in these awards are music and musical education, orchestras, jazz, opera, ballet, modern dance, choreography, visual arts, painting, sculpture, performance arts such as acting, set design, scrip-writing, mentoring of emerging actors in theatre, TV and film, journalism, cartoon creation, and heritage organisations who promote local history, etc, an endless list of the best in society.
Awards were handed out to deserving people in the Libraries, Development of Reading and Literacy, Museums, Community Development, and other spheres of influence in the local cultural arenas.
Particularly poignant during the event was a presentation made of all those outstanding artistic people who lost their lives during Covid and are a great loss to our cultural society. Another long list of the best of the best, all sadly missed.
This year's 20th annual awards ceremony ended with presentations for Outstanding Lifetime Achievements in several fields.
