The Synod takes place in a different town or city every year. Despite freezing weather conditions, the general vibe of the Synod was one of great warmth, hospitality and Christian fellowship.
The business of the Synod took place over Friday and Saturday at the George Methodist Church in Plantation Road where 250 delegates converged.
They were hosted by the Outeniqua Circuit. All the different societies of the Circuit, including George, Mossel Bay and Oudtshoorn, Thembalethu, Rosemoor and Lawaaikamp, Nobantu and Bridgeton and Nomzamo took took turns in assisting the Synod.
In his address, Bishop Michel Hansrod gave an overview of the history of Methodism in the George area which has its roots in the Eastern Cape branch of missionary endeavours and was originally part of the Grahamstown District. "With the possible discovery of gold historically known as the Millwood Rush in Knysna in 1885, people flooded the area from all around South Africa and beyond and in so doing, Methodism was brought into the Outeniqua Area.
"Methodism amongst the English speaking white inhabitants in George was a somewhat late bloomerand the first formal service was only held in February 1976 and a society formed in 1977."
Referring to the tumultuous times that the world is in, Bishop Hansrod named a large number of community projects run by the Methodist Church which makes a difference in people's lives. The Methodist Church is also growing and making inroads in new areas.
