ENVIRONMENT NEWS - While the municipal teams continue to deal with storm-damaged trees across George following the recent severe weather, the municipality has raised its concerns about residents allegedly taking advantage of the situation to remove healthy trees without authorisation.
According to a municipal statement issued last week, several reports have been received of healthy trees on municipal property being cut down or heavily pruned under the guise of storm-related clean-up.
The municipality has reminded residents that trees on public land, road reserves and pavements may not be removed, damaged, pruned or cut down without prior approval, and warned that offenders could face fines and legal action.
The correct application and assessment procedures must be followed before any work may be undertaken.
"Unauthorised removal of municipal trees is a contravention of municipal regulations and may result in fines and further legal action," read the statement.
"Trees are a valuable part of George's urban forest, providing shade, habitat for wildlife, stormwater benefits, and enhancing the character of our town. We urge all residents to help protect these important community assets."
It is hoped that this tree will grow a canopy again. It is on municipal property, but this did not stop a business owner from starting to chop it down. Fortunately, a tree expert who drove by realised what was happening and halted the destruction, warned the transgressor and informed the municipality's tree committee. Photo: Supplied
If you believe a tree poses a safety risk or requires attention, please report it to the municipality so that it can be assessed by the relevant officials.
See something? Say something. Residents are encouraged to report any suspected illegal removal, damage, or felling of healthy trees on municipal property.
Prompt reporting helps us protect George's valuable urban forest and ensure that offenders are held accountable. If it is safe to do so, please provide photographs, the exact location, and any identifying details.
