GEORGE NEWS - The 40 Fingers Classic Concert performed at Fancourt's Ballroom on Friday 22 December was a pleasurable occasion enjoyed by families of George and environs. South Africa's renowned pianist Charl du Plessis, true to form, gave a brilliant performance along with three of the country's top pianists - Elna van der Merwe, Albie van Schalkwyk and Pieter Grobler.
Their professional performance included a skilful execution of a suite for two pianos and even a joint performance by four pianists playing on one Steinway piano. The programme covered classical numbers like the Arabesque op. 18 by Robert Schuman and popular songs like John Lennon's Imagine and Bart Howard's Fly me to the Moon, performed in a classical style.
South Cape Motoring editor and trained classical pianist, Anica Krüger, posed the rhetorical question: What do you get when you mix the crème de la crème of SA pianists? Answer - so much fun it is almost illegal. "It truly was a virtuoso performance," she said. "Compliments must go to the artistic director, Dr Ronell Van Aswegen, for putting together such a suave show and delicious dinner with the assistance of production manager Adriaan Louw."
The Bella Musica Trio - Rùan van der Vyver (flute), Calvin Steyn (violin) and Jessica Stark (cello) played in the foyer before the start of the concert. On the right are admirers Gaia Parker and Yemaya Morley.
George families such as Mrs Esmé Morley, her husband Dr John Morley and their daughter Sophia greatly enjoyed the concert.
