The historic landmark is going to be updated with due regard to the historical façade, and be given a more welcoming interior. MD Peter Grindlay said Oakhurst shares in the theatre management's vision of creating a vibrant space for audiences and artists.
Since 1969, when the former girls' school was converted to a theatre, it has been a lively heart in the Southern Cape, producing an innovative and creative programme with world-renowned artists performing alongside local talent.
The theatre's Chairman Heather Stead, said, "The theatre has embarked on building on income streams through business contacts and networking events." Oakhurst's national headquarters flanks the theatre in York Street and both buildings now sport the same colour.
George Arts Theatre Manager Beatrice Esterhuysen said she is over the moon about the transformation. "It is a dream come true to become a contemporary and relevant place were local talent is showcased, as well as visiting artists."
The staff and volunteers - the people who keep the landmark functioning - are delighted that a lifeline has been thrown at the theatre as far as upkeep is concerned. Behind the scenes many of them have, over the years, put in an extraordinary amount of work to keep the place functioning.
In future the theatre will be known as the Oakhurst Insurance George Arts Theatre.
Rewiring
"We have taken heart and even launched our own electrical rewiring programme. The public support of the functions held there - such as the Celtic evening at which volunteers helped ensure that piping hot fish and chips was served - has brought much needed funds for a building that needs constant upkeep," said Esterhuysen.
Grindlay concluded, "We have tough and devoted people in our community; as a company we are committed to keeping the theatre alive. A grand opening renovation celebration of phase one will be held in June 2014."
