The select group of pupils from George High School and PW Botha College, invited to attend the Wednesday matinee performance at Fancourt, were mesmerised by the world of showbiz - for some it was a first time; rendering them almost speechless (when asked how they enjoyed it some could only muster "Dit was lekker!").
In the evening an adult audience was bowled over by the show.
Tenor Voldi George and Soprano Petronel Baard put up a powerhouse performance alternating between suave, French Café numbers with songs from Moulin Rouge arranged by this versatile duo to upbeat medleys. A constant change in rhythm, from evocative romantic numbers like Ne Me Quitte Pas to cheerful songs like Life is a Cabaret, ensured an enraptured audience. Petronel was brilliant in Jacques Brel's Marieke and Voldi's impeccable vocals (in French) in Sous le Ciel de Paris and Sous Les Ponts de Paris was more than impressive. The two plan to take their world-class show, which includes Autumn Leaves (Joseph Kosma) and El Tango de Roxanne (Sting), sung as a duo (interspersed with solos), to Johannesburg and to the rest of the country.
Jeannette's dance solo to the music of Claude Debussy's Impression was breathtaking and difficult to capture on film. The graceful guest performance of Monique Zürich-Bubanj to Cry me a River was also greatly enjoyed. She is the daughter of Ronell van Aswegen, the artistic director of the Fancourt Classic Concert Series 2014/2015 that will see the next performance on Wednesday 3 December at the ballroom were a special stage is erected for the occasion.
The energetic Infernal Hop from Orpheus in the Underworld (can-can) was a fitting end to a lovely show.
A lively rendition of the can-can added spice to the cabaret show given by the George High School dance group on Wednesday.
