This local dancer trained at the Diana Townsend School of Ballet for the past ten years where she passed her advanced examination in 2009 with honours and has been an associate teacher for the past two years.
Within the first few days of Simoné’s graduate course which started on 17 January, she was selected to dance with the company in ’Romeo and Juliet’. She will also join the company’s tour to Bloemfontein as a snowflake in ‘The Nutcracker’.
Two local dancers, Bradley Zeelie and William Constable, have also impressed those in the know with their dancing talent.
Bradley has been awarded a scholarship for the ‘Dance for All’ programme in Cape Town and also received a KKNK scholarship to further his studies in dance.
William (19) is currently in his second year at UCT studying for his Dance Teacher’s Diploma after Diana Townsend noted his potential as a 17 year old.
After asking him if he was keen on doing ballet, she offered him a scholarship.
Although William feels "I started late and have much to catch up with", his performing talents have stood him in good stead.
He appeared in the popular play Vaselientjie at the KKNK and at ArtScapes. The latter returned to its location due to popular demand. He also had the ho-nour of representing UCT during the university ho-lidays in a remake of ‘West Side Story’ where he danced alongside students from Texas’ Southern Methodist University and the University of KwaZulu Natal. Future goals for William include performing and then teaching, as he hopes to contribute to the upliftment and social development of his community.
