Youngsters of Golden Valley in Blanco, Thembalethu and Conville were given the chance to organise a talent show to showcase the best of their local talent before a panel of judges from the GSA. The Blanco and Thembalethu talent shows were successfully completed, whereas the Conville show will take place on Saturday 8 May.
The Sinako Youth Forum, who organised the Thembalethu Talent Show for last Friday evening, consists of a group of youngsters who have actively been involved in exploring the expressive arts in their area. They have been very enthusiastic about the opportunity to benefit from this project.
Funded by the Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport, the project encourages the different groups to do their own advertising and organise the talent show from start to finish.
The winners of the different talent shows will perform at the George Arts Theatre on Saturday 29 May. All winners will then compete in the George Arts Theatre Schools Festival in October.
"Art by its nature is creative and allows for a wide interpretation of what is a ‘winning and appealing’ performance," says Heather Stead, coordinator and deputy chairperson of the GSA.
"Our criteria therefore for judging was not whether the piece appealed to the judges but rather was based on performance, creative interpretation and the potential and enthusiasm to learn further skills."
