GEORGE NEWS - All three races scheduled for George Lakes Yacht Club could be completed last Sunday. A light south-easter provided just enough motive power - some would have preferred a bit more. These races form part of the series for the Commodore's Cup.
In the first race, the Fireball of David Laing and Anthony Alant was able to extend a lead ahead of the other mono hulls, but had close competition from the Dart 18 of Hans Delport.
The Fireball finished just seconds ahead. Behind, Henry Paine (Laser) built up a lead of over two minutes ahead of the rest. For this race, Evelyn Osborne on a Laser Radial got second place on handicap, behind Henry, with Ashley Layland (Laser 4.7) third.
In race two, Henry and Maurits Lammers didn't spot the course change and set off to towards the original mark. Coming back to correct this put them at the back of the fleet. They managed to overtake some during the race, but not enough to feature at the top of the rankings. Hans Delport advanced ahead of the fleet to finish in front of the Laing / Alant Fireball.
The first Laser (radial) to finish was Kyle Koeries, giving him first overall. Second place was taken by the Laser 4.7 of Ashley Layland. Third place was a tie between Luchen America (Laser 4.7) and Evelyn Osborne.
In Race 3, the Dart 18 was once again line honours winner, comfortably ahead of the Fireball. Henry Paine made no mistake and was once again far ahead of the other Lasers, with Maurits Lammers and Kyle Koeries the closest in his wake. Paine was the overall winner of this race, with Kyle Koeries second and Luchen America third.
Overall, in the series for the Commodore's Cup, David Laing and Anthony Alant are leading (David sailed his Laser in the first two races). Luchen America is in second place, half a point ahead of Maurits Lammers.
